Pilot Group Assignments

Each item below explores one feature or item in a few short steps with link to feedback form

General Information Before You Begin

Four Ways to Find Content

Science Central provides four methods for finding the science you want to see and consume, quickly and easily. The assignments explore how to navigate each of these methods.

  • Set Up a Custom 'My Page' - A page that can be visited regularly that will populate the most recent AHA-produced science specific to you.
  • Navigation, Sub Navigation and Personalization - Exploration of main and sub navigation menus to narrow the content topic, then through clicks, the page learns preferences and delivers targeted content.
  • Search with Narrowing Capabilities - Utilization of a search bar feature with the ability to narrow the results by specific criteria.
  • Opt-in Curated Email/Texts - Choose to receive emails or texts, at your selected frequency, that are curated just for you.

For an optimal experience, you may want to log in to your PHD account prior to beginning the exercises. Based on industry standards, a new login status for non-members will be introduced and required to review extended content. PHD members will have access to exclusive content and ability to opt into curated emails and/or texts when those are available..

Feedback Forms

After each assignment section, you will see a link to a short feedback form.

  • Once you've completed the steps, please answer all the questions, providing as much information as you can, and submit.
  • There is also a Quick Feedback Form that we hope you will use often to report any bugs you may encounter, ideas you'd like to share, issues you've come across, and recommendations to improve the experience.
  • All feedback will be reviewed by the team and leadership. Bugs will be reported and resolved prior to the resource launch date and all suggestions will be considered for implementation at a future stage.

Focus Group Discussions

In addition to completing short feedback forms, participants are asked to participate in one of the focus group discussions that will be held in mid-May. If you are unable to participate in one of these focus groups, contact Melanie Hoffman to schedule an individual discussion.

Embargo

We anticipate Science Central launching this summer. Please treat the link and details of Science Central and this pilot as an embargoed content and do not share.

Set Up Your Customized 'My Page'

See content just for you with a click of a button!

Science Central allows you to set up a page customized specifically for you. The set up is a one-time process and is super quick and easy. There are five criteria that allow this resource to show the content you want to see - area of science, degree, role, expertise and interest. Selecting is as easy as checking a box - click all that apply. Once you have set up your page, each time you click 'My Page,' your content will update to show you the most current science.

  1. Click on My Page.
  2. Log into your Professional Heart Daily (PHD) membership account. You are a member, but if you were not, you could set up a free PHD non-member account that will allow access to this page and most functionality.
  3. The first time you visit this page, it will take you to a dashboard to select your five criteria (area of science, degree, role, expertise and interest). Check all that apply. This is a one-time set up.
  4. Click Submit and you will be taken to your customized preference page. From this point on, when you click ‘My Page’ it will take you directly here. On the Science Central Pilot Group landing page, there are three places to find the 'My Page' link - in the navigation below the page title, in the callout bar and in the main category link grouping under the callout bar.
  5. At any point, you can return to your dashboard and easily modify your selections by clicking the Content Settings dropdown in the top right then Edit Preferences. Once you click submit, it will indicate at the top that your changes have been saved and provide a link to return to your ‘My Page,’ where the content will update to your new preferences.

Tour Content Page and Functionality

Once you are on a content page, you will see sub navigation, a video bar, a tabbed section with many options and related articles. These steps will guide you through each section and how it works.

Sub Navigation

  • At the top of the page, directly under the title, you will see up to three columns of navigation links.
    • If you are on your 'My Page,' this navigation comes from the expertise/interest areas you selected when you set up your 'My Page.' You will also see All, which is the default when the page opens. That indicates that content from all areas is reflected in the sections below. At any time, you can click on one of the other sub navigation links for a targeted view of content on that category.
    • If you are on a category page (i.e., Cardiology), which you would get to from the main category navigation link grouping on the Science Central Pilot Group landing page, the navigation under the page title contains a list of categories that further narrow the science focus. From the main 14 categories, narrowing may break down as much as two additional levels. As an example, if you start your search by clicking on the Cardiology link, you will see 18 navigation links under the page title. If you click cardiac critical care, the content will reload and focus solely on cardiac critical care, and at the top, you will see more navigation, further narrowing topics within cardiac critical care.
  • Click through with a topic in mind and see if you can locate relevant content.

Video Gallery

  • You will see a bar of videos and podcasts. Each are approximately 2-3 minutes long and explore one specific item from the overall topic.
  • When you click on one, a pop up window will appear and inside, start playing the clip. In the pop up, you will see:
    • Red circle with an X to close the pop up window.
    • Heart with Save Video. When you are logged into your PHD Member or Non-member account, you will be able to save this clip to your My Saved Videos page, which can be accessed by clicking the Content Settings dropdown and selecting My Saved Videos. Once saved, the heart will remain red until you unsaved it on your My Saved Videos page. You will be able to click and unsave the video from the modal soon. There is a bug that the technical team is working on.
    • The video window is from YouTube and has the standard YouTube features. This includes recommended videos, which AHA has no control over or endorsement of, when you hit pause. Simply click the X that is part of the bar of suggested videos, and they will disappear.
    • Title of the short clip is in red under the video.
    • Description of the short clip is under the video.
    • See Full Content button will open a new window tab (so that you are not completely leaving Science Central) and take you directly to the full video or podcast that the clip came from. It will either take you to where the video resides within the professional.heart.org site or to its own page. Unless the video/podcast is sponsored content, the user will need to be logged in to view the long version. If they are not already logged in, they will be alerted to do so on that page. If the video is on its own page, you will see recommended videos of other similar short content clips. To click these, you need to click the image thumbnail, then a modal will pop up directly on that page, allowing you to view or listen to the video or podcast clip.

Tabbed Section

  • This is the section under the video bar on the left.
  • The section defaults to the Highlights tab which shows you the five most recent items based on the category of the page. It is possible that they could all be from the same source (i.e., Journals).
  • There are 10 additional tabs allowing you to see the most resent content produced in those areas. Rolling over 'More' will make a dropdown with the others appear.
  • Click through the tabs to explore the content within each. (We are working on a tab with no content to not show as a tabbed option, but you may see a blank tab at this time. We also are aware of the size discrepancy and tightness to the right column and those are being resolved.)

Related Articles

  • This is a list of related articles to the page category, much like the results of a search query.

Functionality Features

  • You will see a search feature, and when you are logged in, a Content Setting dropdown (dropdown appears when clicked), across from the page title on the right. First we will review the Content Settings.
    • Edit My Preferences - When this is clicked, you will be taken to your dashboard and the five criteria will appear. You can modify your selections, click submit and a message will indicate that your changes have been saved and provide a link taking you back to your 'My Page.' The content will populate based on the updates you made.
    • Opt-in Email - This is coming soon and will be where you can opt in or out of personally curated email and text messages. There is a section on the Get Started page that explains these in more detail.
    • Reset Personalization - The Navigation, Sub Navigation and Personalization method, one of the four ways of finding the content you want to see, has a focused personalization feature applied. After the platform understands the type of content you are looking for, it will personalize the full page. This feature allows you to reset the page to the default state before personalization. Note: If this feature is selected, it will reset all personalization Science Central-wide. More information on this can be found on the Get Started page under the The Navigation, Sub Navigation and Personalization section.
    • My Saved Videos - This takes you to a page that will house all the video clips you've selected to save. More information is above under Video Gallery / Heart with Save Video bullet.
  • Search bar -Visit Assignment 4: Search with Narrowing Capabilities on the Get Started page for full information on using this feature.

Navigation, Sub Navigation and Personalization

From the Science Central Pilot Group landing page, you will see fourteen main categories and the ‘My Page’ link. After launch, users will be able to toggle over Science Central in the top navigation bar and see these same links.

  • With the content you’d like to see in mind, select the main category that applies. (i.e., Cardiology). Once you are on that page, you will see new, further focused navigation under the title that allows you to select a more specific area of that category. You can stay on the main category page and see everything within that topic, or click to narrow your content. (i.e., Cardiac Critical Care)
  • Once you narrow, some pages will allow you to further narrow your content by displaying another set of focused categories. (i.e., ICU/CICU)
  • Once you are on the page that showcases the content you are looking for, click around and view the content – videos, tabbed sections, related articles, whatever is of interest.
  • The site is learning your preferences and the type of content you are interested in. Upon refresh, the page will eventually populate content that matches what it has learned.
  • Each time you return to the site and that category page, the personalization will remain and update with targeted content. (Currently there is a bug and the personalization feature is not displaying the focused content, however it is learning your preferences.)
  • At any time, you can remove the personalization and return to the initial state by clicking the Content Settings dropdown and selecting Reset Personalization. (Currently, you have to be logged in to access the Content Settings dropdown. The reset feature will be available without login at launch.) It will take you to the dashboard and the reset button. Note: By clicking on reset, it will reset ALL pages that have personalization set on them, not just the one you came from.
    • Although the personalization is not currently displaying, please walk through exercise of the bullet just above and reset the personalization.
  • While your current page is personalized, you can still click to another main category, sub, or sub sub page and surf content and those pages will also personalize.

Search a Topic, then Click to Narrow Results

From a content page, whether you are on your ‘My Page’ or on a category page, there is a Search all Content feature across from the page title on the right. Note: This search is specific to Science Central. This is different and separate from the ‘Type to search…’ feature at the very top of the page that will pull content across professional.heart.org.

  • Click on ‘Search all Content’ and a cursor will appear. Then type a topic you’d like Science Central to search and hit return. First try a broader term, then go back and try a more specific topic (i.e., PVD).
  • You will see search results on the right. On the left lists that provide a variety of ways to narrow your search based on category, area of science, target audience, year content was produced, content type and type of content. For each of these, you will see the volume (number) of content to the right, based on that narrowed option.
  • Click as many options that apply. As you do, you will see the numbers reduce.
  • Once you find the content you are looking for, click on the title and the content will appear. This will open in a new window tab.

Opt-in for Curated Email or Text

This is still in development and unfortunately will not be something we can test during this pilot. It is scheduled to be live at launch. Instead, please read thoroughly about how it will work, then proceed to the feedback form.

This is a PHD Members-only benefit for those who would like to receive the most recent, custom curated content right to their email or text. Using the five criteria selected for the 'My Page', Science Central will be disseminating emails and/or texts with a maximum of six of the newest AHA content in those areas.

At launch, members will be able to opt in to receive their communications weekly, every other week or monthly. At this time, they will disseminate on Tuesday - email at 6 a.m. CT and texts at noon CT. We have plans for members to be able to select when they want to receive emails or texts based on day of the week, time of day and frequency, as well as the ability to select a type of content and receive at a different frequency than other content (i.e., a member may select to receive guidelines when they come out, with all other content delivering weekly). Plans are in place for development to begin in the phase after launch.

Members will be able to opt in or out of these emails or texts at any time. The five criteria for 'My Page' connects to these curated messages, so they can be updated at any time, but will change for both.
