Vasan Ramachandran is a cardiologist with subspecialty training in echocardiography and cardiovascular epidemiology and Founding Dean of the School of Public Health and a Professor of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center, both in San Antonio, Texas.
Previously, he served as Chief in the Section of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology in the Department of Medicine and Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine. He was also the Principal Investigator of the Framingham Heart Study from 2014-22. Dr. Ramachandran is the Principal Investigator of the ongoing NHLBI-funded Risk Underlying Rural Areas Longitudinal (RURAL) Study. He was an Associate Editor of Circulation from 2002-16 and the founding editor-in-chief of Circulation Cardiovascular Genetics from 2008-18. He’s also a trained mentor and served as the PI of a Post-doctoral T32 program and an R38 program (Stimulating Access to Research in Residency) from 2020-22 at Boston University.
His research is focused on: A) rural cardiovascular health disparities in the U.S.; B) epidemiology and novel risk markers of heart failure, with a focus on HFpEF, including evaluating the role of ventricular-vascular remodeling and coupling; C) epidemiology of cardiac remodeling and arterial stiffness; D) population-based exercise testing, with a focus on cardiopulmonary exercise testing with metabolite profiling; and E) assessment of novel biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk, including genomic, metabolomic, proteomic and microbiome markers, and risk prediction.
