Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs (PREVENT™) Risk Calculator

The American Heart Association PREVENT™ risk calculator is designed to estimate cardiovascular disease risk based on cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic health factors.

The American Heart Association PREVENT™ calculator aims to help clinicians assess cardiovascular disease risk and facilitate clinician-patient discussions to optimize prevention of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure.

What should you know about PREVENT™?

  • The PREVENT™ calculator is based on contemporary data from more than 6 million diverse U.S. adults and is more applicable to the general U.S. population than previous tools.
  • The calculator can estimate 10-year and 30-year risk in people from ages 30-79.
  • PREVENT™ includes kidney and metabolic health factors in the calculations for a holistic and more precise estimation of risk compared to previous tools.
  • PREVENT™ includes ZIP code for an estimation of social factors that influence health.

Understanding Risk Assessment: Introducing the PREVENT™ Risk Calculator

Explore how the PREVENT™ risk calculator helps identify at-risk individuals differently than traditional tools. Dr. Sadiya Khan highlights the power of PREVENT™ to improve prevention, care, and research outcomes across diverse populations.

Intended Use of PREVENT™

This calculator is intended for use by clinicians for primary prevention patients (those without coronary heart disease, stroke, or heart failure) who are between the ages of 30-79 years. Estimating absolute risk may assist and guide clinicians and patients in shared decision-making.

Accessing the PREVENT™ open-source code

The American Heart Association is providing open access to the PREVENT™ source code through a license agreement. The code is available at no cost to health care professionals, health care clinics and systems, academic/research institutions, researchers and companies who provide health risk assessment tools.

Chiadi Ndumele, MD, PhD, MHS, chair of the AHA Presidential Advisory on Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Health, leads a frequently asked questions discussion with Sadiyah S. Kahn, MD, MSc, lead author for the American Heart Association scientific statement that introduced the novel prediction equations used to develop the PREVENT risk calculator to help clinicians better understand how to make the best use of this new tool.

PREVENT for Primary Care

The American Heart Association PREVENT risk calculator is a tool for clinicians to help people understand their risk for developing heart disease, stroke, or heart failure. It is designed to estimate risk based on health factors that assess cardiovascular, kidney and metabolic health. Hear Dr. Sadiya Khan and Dr. Howard Haft discuss the risk calculator and the considerations for prevention and primary care.
