Non-Traumatic Lower Extremity Amputations by Congressional District “Heat Map”
The interactive map below illustrates lower limb amputations per 100,000 Medicare beneficiaries per year, by state and by Congressional district.
The three tabs across the top enable the user to see national representations, state representations, and data in fully accessible table format, including highest to lowest rate rankings by district. The user may view rates for 2017 or 2018 by accessing the “Reporting Year” drop down.
This interactive heat map shows the number of individuals in each state, congressional district, and county who experienced lower extremity amputation within five years of being diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). State, congressional district and county maps include filters for age, racial/ethnic groups, and gender.
For demonstration in the map, amputation rates were divided into four equal groups (quartiles), with darker colors indicating higher amputation rates and lighter colors indicating lower amputation rates. In each analysis, the initial time period was used to establish these categories for mapping. Gray represents areas where the data is either missing or suppressed to protect patient privacy.
The data used to create this heat map is publicly available from the 2003-23 Medicare and United States Census Bureau data. Congressional Districts are represented using the 2023 Housing and Urban Development and United States Postal Service (HUD-USPS) ZIP Code Crosswalk.
