- Continued research on mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease prevention, pathogenesis, progression and therapeutic intervention are needed for making lifesaving advances.
- Limited awareness of the benefits of basic biomedical research and a reduced sense of urgency among the public, policy makers and lawmakers is contributing to funding cuts in fundamental cardiovascular research that could slow the development of lifesaving advances. Articulating the return on research investment is challenging because absolute quantification requires complex determinations such as the monetary value of a year of human life.
