Chagas Cardiomyopathy: An Update of Current Clinical Knowledge and Management

- Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is an important etiology of heart failure, stroke, arrhythmia, and sudden death. It has spread beyond its origins in Central and South America, now affects at least 300,000 US residents and is growing in prevalence in other traditionally non-endemic areas.
- Healthcare providers and health systems outside of Latin America should be equipped to recognize, diagnose, and treat Chagas disease and to prevent further disease transmission.
