Peer Reviewer Resources

Tools to help

evaluate proposals

Thank you for serving as an AHA Peer Reviewer! This page contains documents to support peer reviewers evaluate proposals for research funding. The AHA encourages participants to take the unbiased training below. The video and accompanying slides teach mental shortcuts to help reduce natural bias in attitudes and behaviors that can hinder the scoring and decision making process.

The AHA DOES NOT permit the use of a large language model (LLM – e.g. ChatGPT) or an artificial intelligence tool to generate and/or edit content in peer review critiques. Uploading of any portion of a research proposal into a large language model (LLM – e.g. ChatGPT) or an artificial intelligence tool to assist in writing a critique of the proposal is explicitly prohibited as it is a violation of the AHA’s Peer Reviewer Certification Statement (to include confidentiality, non-disclosure, and conflict of interest).

Video: Peer Review Unconscious Bias Training

Commit to practices that advance a diverse investigator workforce and health equity in AHA and our institutions. This training will help you develop strategies to become more aware of and mitigate biases, with the goal of being an effective ally when observing potential structural bias and unconscious bias in AHA peer review. Unconscious biases are natural social stereotypes about others outside their own conscious awareness.
