CVSN Message from the Chair
Lisa Kitko, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN
As Chair of the Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing (CVSN) , I am proud to support our mission of advancing cardiovascular and stroke care through nursing leadership, scientific innovation, and clinical excellence. CVSN serves as a vibrant professional home for nurses committed to improving patient outcomes by translating evidence into practice, shaping research priorities, and fostering career development at every stage. Together, we amplify the voice of nursing within the AHA and throughout the broader cardiovascular health community.
Nursing is one of the 16 councils within the AHA, and CVSN plays a vital role in advancing the organization’s mission. We do this by leveraging the clinical expertise of cardiovascular and stroke nurses, translating new science into care, supporting lifelong learning and professional growth, and advocating for the essential role of nursing in improving cardiovascular health.
We invite you to explore the CVSN website and learn more about the many ways to become professionally engaged. The Council and AHA offer travel awards to major conferences, including Scientific Sessions and the International Stroke Conference, which features the State-of-the-Science Stroke Nursing Symposium as a pre-conference event. Members can also apply for research grants and career development awards, participate in writing Scientific and Advisory Statements, engage in advocacy and policy initiatives, receive early-career mentorship, and network with leaders in cardiovascular and stroke nursing.
CVSN’s work is made possible by the dedication of its volunteer members. Through our active committees, we provide a wide range of opportunities for involvement—whether your interests lie in research, education, clinical care, mentorship, or policy. Whether you're a nurse scientist, doctorally prepared nurse, educator, executive, advanced practice provider, staff nurse, or student, if you are passionate about cardiovascular and stroke health, then CVSN is the place for you.
I encourage you to become a CVSN member and complete the Science Volunteer Form to get involved. There is truly something for everyone—sign up, reach out, and take that next step in your professional journey. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or any member of the CVSN leadership team with questions or to learn more about the many opportunities available through the Council.
