Lorena Rodriguez is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Nursing at The University of Illinois Chicago. She received her Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Health Science with a concentration in Health & Aging at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2022. She also earned her Associate of Science at Malcolm X College in 2020 as a Chicago Star recipient. Furthermore, she is a first-generation student hoping to become a future Latina nurse practitioner specializing in family medicine or trauma. She has volunteered her time at the University of Illinois Health and Science system in outpatient pediatric care and participated in Covid-19 vaccine assistance and support services. She had the honor of participating in a mentorship program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago in 2021 that allowed her to engage with medical professionals in public health lectures, workforce education workshops, and community services relating to clinical care, research, education, and advocacy. She developed a formal presentation and literature review on Immigrant physical and mental health while utilizing her skills in interprofessional collaboration, education, and research. Additionally, she has worked with students with disabilities aiding in activities of daily living through assistive technology. Her experiences as a caregiver and advocate have driven her passion for justice, equity, advocacy, and desire to eliminate health disparities through cultural competency, health literacy, and patient-centered care. As an NHLCC scholar, she will expand her expertise in patient care and health promotion which will prepare her as a future healthcare provider. Assuredly, she will lead with equity, compassion, and love that can be fostered through this prestigious program with the American Heart Association.
