Jonathon Cummock
MD/PhD Student
Texas A&M College of Medicine
Jonathon Cummock is an MD/PhD candidate with Texas A&M University College of Medicine currently training at Houston Methodist Hospital. His current research applies artificial intelligence to stroke neuroimaging and mental health diagnosis, including diverse, disparate, and minority populations, and has received multiple grant awards from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, and the American Heart Association. He utilizes multiomics big data to improve early disease detection, intervention, and outcome prediction. Jonathon began his education and research training at Brigham Young University investigating MRI neuroanatomical changes in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, graduating with a B.S. in Neuroscience in 2015. He thereafter worked at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus on a Phase II cancer immunotherapy clinical trial for the treatment of advanced melanoma. Jonathon subsequently transitioned to the Houston Methodist Research Institute in 2016 helping develop a novel swine model of hemorrhagic stroke. He joined the combined MD/PhD program at Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 2016 with a focus on clinical translational sciences. Jonathon’s interest in promoting Hispanic health stems from growing up with an immigrant mother who faced significant barriers in accessing affordable quality healthcare. As an NHLCC Scholar, he hopes to apply his expertise in AI and clinical research to develop targeted health interventions to reduce cardiovascular risk within the Hispanic community with accessible, culturally competent healthcare solutions to bridge the health equity gap.
