Diana Castillo Bonilla grew up in Colombia in a large, close-knit household that included her grandparents, mother, five aunts and uncles, and several cousins. Her home was always open to anyone in need, and from an early age, she learned about the intersection of medicine, hospitality, and community. At just seven years old, Diana became her mother’s primary caregiver, gaining a deep understanding of medicine through her mother’s diagnosis of cardiomyopathy and witnessing firsthand the realities of left heart failure. Beyond medical knowledge, Diana’s mother taught her the importance of service and compassion. Despite her declining health, she remained deeply involved in the community, regularly participating in health fairs and service activities. Her mother’s example inspired Diana to care for others with love and dedication. After her mother passed away, Diana moved to Miami, where she quickly recognized the impact, she could make by using her native Spanish to support patients. Over the years, she has applied her language skills in various roles, including as a caregiver, volunteer, translator, clinical coordinator, and now as a medical student. Her experiences have reinforced her passion for medicine, mentorship, and representing her heritage as a Black Hispanic woman. Diana is focused and resilient, driven by a commitment to work with underserved communities and the Hispanic population.
