2023 Alexander S. Nadas Lecturer - Angela Sharkey, MD, FAAP

Angela Sharkey is a Professor of Pediatrics and Special Advisor to the Dean for Education Innovation at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She is a committed clinician-educator and passionate advocate for the career advancement of medical school faculty. Her demonstrated ability in and passion for this work resulted in national recognition in medical education and faculty professional development. As Special Advisor to the Dean for Education Innovation, she works to integrate new and emerging technologies into education and clinical training.

Dr. Sharkey has served as Vice Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program Director and Course Master of the Pediatric Clerkship at Washington University in St. Louis. While at Washington University, she created and led the Department of Pediatrics’ Office of Faculty Development. Dr. Sharkey is the past chair of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Group on Women in Medicine and Science, an AAMC group whose goal is to advance the full and successful participation and inclusion of women within academic medicine.

Dr. Sharkey is a pediatric cardiologist with a special interest in Marfan syndrome and in fetal cardiology. While at Washington University, Dr. Sharkey served as a site principal investigator for the NIH-sponsored Pediatric Heart Network clinical trial on medical therapy for children and young adults with Marfan syndrome. She is co-founder of Camp Rhythm, an overnight camp experience for children with congenital heart disease.

Dr. Sharkey has been an active member of the American Heart Association’s Council on Lifelong Congenital Heart Disease and Heart Health in the Young, having served on the Early Career and Mentoring Committee and the AHA Committee on Lifelong Learning. Dr. Sharkey has been an invited presenter at the AHA career development workshops, at the AAMC Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Program for Women in Medicine and Science (MidWIMS), and in the American Academy of Pediatrics PREP and PPC courses. She has spoken nationally on career advancement in academic medicine, peer group mentoring, conflict management, and team function.
