Hot Line I: Acute Myocardial Infarction

Mark Creager, MD, president of the American Heart Association and Bob Bonow, MD and Elliott Antman, MD, both past presidents, review the science on acute myocardial infarction presented in Hot Line I.

DOPPLER-CIP (PDF)Determining Optimal non-invasive Parameters for the Prediction of Left vEntricular morphologic and functional Remodelling in Chronic Ischemic Patients
This study investigates which non-invasive measures best predict functional remodeling in patients with suspected chronic ischemic heart disease.

At baseline, remodeling is best predicted by thickened walls and a small left ventricle.

Hot Line II: Atrial Fibrillation/Pacing

Mark Creager, MD, president of the American Heart Association and Bob Bonow, MD and Elliott Antman, MD, both past presidents, discuss the Atrial Fibrillation and Pacing science presented in Hot Line II.

EAST-AF/ UNDER-ATP (PDF) – Kansai Plus Atrial Fibrillation Trial (KPAF)
Two different pharmacological approaches for using drug therapy to improve long-term outcomes after catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation were compared in these two trials: EAST-AF/ UNDER-ATP.

Results: There was no improvement in AF recurrence-free rate with either approach in addition to pulmonary vein isolation.

BELIEF (PDF) – Effect of empirical electrical left atrial appendage isolation on long-term procedure outcome in patients with long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation undergoing catheter ablation
The AF outcomes for standard pulmonary vein isolation versus left atrial appendage isolation were compared in this study.

Results: In patients with long-standing AF, adding LAA to the standard approach improved recurrence-free rates for AF.

AEGEAN (PDF) – Assessment of an education and guidance program for apixaban adherence in non-valvular atrial fibrillation
This randomized control trial looks at the effectiveness of an education program intended to improve adherence for patients taking medication for non-valvular atrial fibrillation.

Results: Adherence was not improved with the use of the educational program.

LEADLESS II (PDF) – Safety and efficacy of a leadless pacemaker
In patients who were candidates for permanent ventricular pacing, the safety and efficacy of a leadless ventricular pacemaker was evaluated.

Results: The pre-set goals were met for safety and efficacy.
