Department Head Letter Instructions


Please refer to the instructions below for the award type that your letter will support.
The applicant cannot submit the proposal without your letter. Please be mindful of the deadline date.
 

Instructions for the Career Development Award

The Career Development Award must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-6 below:

  1. The applicant's academic appointment, career stage and promise;
     
  2. Your knowledge of the applicant's past scientific accomplishments and publications;
     
  3. The applicant's demonstrated commitment to research related to the proposal;
     
  4. The institution's commitment to the applicant.
     
  5. Date of applicant’s last salary review.
     
  6. The salary for this applicant falls within the following percentile range for faculty at the same level in my department: 0-25th, 26th-50th, 51st-75th, 76th-100th

Please avoid referring to personal circumstances or attributes of the applicant: Marital status, age or gender (e.g. young, woman, man), the juggling of factors such as child care or illness, and roles of the applicant outside of the professional setting (e.g. mother, husband, father).

Complete the letter and return it to the applicant by e-mail. The applicant will upload it to the electronic application.



Instructions for the Health Equity Research Network


Applications must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-6 below:

  1. The applicant's academic appointment, career stage and promise;
     
  2. Your knowledge of the applicant's past scientific accomplishments and publications;
     
  3. The applicant's demonstrated commitment to research related to the network topic;
     
  4. The institution's commitment to the applicant and their participation in the Health Equity Research Network
     
  5. Date of applicant’s last salary review.
     
  6. The salary for this applicant falls within the following percentile range for faculty at the same level in my department: 0-25th, 26th-50th, 51st-75th, 76th-100th

The EIA application must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-6 below:

  1. The applicant's promise and the impact the Established Investigator Award would have on the applicant's career;
     
  2. Your knowledge of the applicant's past scientific accomplishments and publications;
     
  3. The applicant's demonstrated commitment to cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular diseases and/or brain health;
     
  4. The institution's commitment to the applicant.
     
  5. Date of applicant’s last salary review.
     
  6. The salary for this applicant falls within the following percentile range for faculty at the same level in my department: 0-25th, 26th-50th, 51st-75th, 76th-100th

Both the Center Director's and Project PI's applications must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-6 below:

  1. The applicant's academic appointment, career stage and promise;
     
  2. Your knowledge of the applicant's past scientific accomplishments and publications;
     
  3. The applicant's demonstrated commitment to research related to the network topic;
     
  4. The institution's commitment to the applicant and their participation in the AHA Strategically Focused Research Network.
     
  5. Date of applicant’s last salary review.
     
  6. The salary for this applicant falls within the following percentile range for faculty at the same level in my department: 0-25th, 26th-50th, 51st-75th, 76th-100th

Instructions for the A-TRAC Pilot Projects Grant Programs

Applications must be accompanied by a letter from the Department Head, which addresses items 1-6 below:

  1. Assurance that the awardee will have an appointment and will be afforded the same opportunities for advancement as other faculty members of equivalent rank and time in grade;
     
  2. The applicant’s current position title and the applicant’s expected position title at award activation, with an explanation of the meaning of the title;
     
  3. Information regarding the assignment of research space, including an explanation of the department’s space policy and/or the relationship of the applicant to the person to whom the space is assigned;
     
  4. The relationship to and name and title of the person to whom the applicant reports;
     
  5. The relationship of the applicant to any more senior investigators with which he/she will work;
     
  6. Your plans/expectations for the applicant’s development as an independent scientist, including the likelihood that the applicant will submit an independent proposal to the NIH over the next two years.
