Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) Lower Extremity Amputations Heat Map

The purpose of the map is to spread awareness and assist advocacy efforts to reduce lower extremity amputations. To create the data for this map, the total number of people diagnosed with PAD in each state, congressional district, and county were followed over a five-year period to determine how many underwent lower extremity amputation.

In addition to geographic data, this map includes filters to explore demographic characteristics such as age, race/ethnicity and sex. This information can help better show how PAD affects different people, and how this challenging problem may need different solutions.

About the data: Medicare and United States Census Bureau data were used to create this heat map. Amputation rate is defined as the number of lower limb amputations per 1,000 Medicare patients with PAD.

Map description: The interactive map below illustrates lower limb amputations per 1,000 Medicare patients with PAD. Darker colors indicate areas with higher amputation rates, and lighter colors indicate areas with lower amputation rates. Gray represents areas where the data is either missing or suppressed to protect patient privacy.

Map Instructions for Key Board Users: Use the Tab key to move between different sections of the map application. When a section receives focus, a blue border will appear as a visual indicator. Press Enter to activate the section and access its features, such as filters or table rows.

This interactive heat map shows the number of individuals in each state, congressional district, and county who experienced lower extremity amputation within five years of being diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD). State, congressional district and county maps include filters for age, racial/ethnic groups, and sex.

For demonstration in the map, amputation rates were divided into four equal groups (quartiles), with darker colors indicating higher amputation rates and lighter colors indicating lower amputation rates. In each analysis, the initial time period was used to establish these categories for mapping. Gray represents areas where the data is either missing or suppressed to protect patient privacy.

The data used to create this heat map is publicly available from the 2003-23 Medicare and United States Census Bureau data. Congressional Districts are represented using the 2023 Housing and Urban Development and United States Postal Service (HUD-USPS) ZIP Code Crosswalk.
