Stroke Council Message from the Chair

The American Heart Association’s mission is "to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives." The Stroke Council, one of 16 scientific councils within the American Heart Association, is uniquely dedicated to advancing the science of stroke prevention, treatment and recovery through research and education.

The Stroke Council develops scientifically based publications, meetings, professional education, and training programs and supports the American Stroke Association’s work in translating stroke-related science into effective initiatives and products for the public, healthcare professionals, healthcare facilities and policy makers.

The Stroke Council depends on the active participation of its volunteer members on local, affiliate and national levels. Examples of Stroke Council activities include:

• Developing stroke-related clinical practice guidelines and scientific statements
• Organizing the annual International Stroke Conference
• Providing guidance for the AHA journal Stroke
• Training awards in stroke research for medical, nursing, and rehabilitation therapy students
• Advocating for stroke-related research funding and programs with legislators and policy makers
• Supporting new stroke investigators and clinicians
• Providing professional education to clinicians and scientists on advances in stroke science

The council collaborates with other councils, the AHA staff and State Stroke Systems of Care Programs to strengthen the scientific foundations of the continuum of the stroke system of care, including primary prevention, emergency medical services, acute and subacute stroke treatment, secondary prevention, and recovery.

The Stroke Council depends on the active participation of volunteer members from multiple disciplines on local, affiliate and national levels to accomplish council goals. The Stroke Council Leadership Committee actively seeks volunteers to contribute their time and expertise to the work of the council. We invite everyone interested in stroke research and the clinical care of stroke patients to become a member of the council.
