Blood streamlines circulating a common iliac artery aneurysm. The entry kink to the aneurysmal sac forces blood close to the arterial wall retaining the favorable hemodynamic conditions of high shear stress. The abdominal aorta is also seen to deflect towards the aneurysmal side, a common observation in this study.

Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Plasticity and Autophagy in Dissecting Aortic Aneurysms


Editor's Note:
This article reports that angiotensin II and anti TGF-beta clonal expansion and phenotypic switching of aortic smooth muscle cells as demonstrated by multicolor lineage tracing of vascular smooth muscle cells. Loss of autophagy in vascular smooth muscle cells augments aortic pathologies.
