Clinical Considerations for Competitive Sports Participation for Athletes With Cardiovascular Abnormalities
Published: February 20, 2025

- This statement is an updated version of the 2015 Eligibility and Disqualification Recommendations for Competitive Athletes. It aims to guide clinicians in evaluating the participation of competitive athletes with cardiovascular abnormalities in sports.
- The document is organized into 11 sections, each focused on specific sports topics or disease processes relevant to evaluating the potential benefits and risks of adverse cardiovascular events, including sudden cardiac arrest, during competitive sports participation.
- Task Forces, made up of international experts in sports cardiology, were assigned to each section. They prepared specific "Clinical Considerations Tables" for practitioners to reference. A comprehensive literature review and an emphasis on shared decision-making were essential components in developing all clinical considerations.
