Mid-Career Achievement and Special Recognition Awards


Awards applicants must be members of the American Heart Association (AHA) sponsoring scientific council at the time of application. If you need to become an AHA Professional Member, you should do so one week prior to the application submission deadline for your member account to be processed in time for the application submission deadline.

Mid-career Achievement awards recognize investigators active in basic, clinical, translational or population cardiovascular research for career endeavors and achievements who have made a significant impact on cardiovascular disease and stroke, and those who helped further the mission of the Scientific Councils and the AHA.

Special Recognition Awards are designed to acknowledge outstanding achievements in the field of cardiovascular disease and stroke and/or contributions and service to the of the Scientific Councils and the AHA.

These awards must also comply with the rules and guidelines developed by the Committee on Scientific Sessions Program if held in conjunction with the Scientific Sessions or Specialty Meetings.

Applicants must submit their abstract for Scientific Sessions by the abstract submission deadline to be eligible for abstract related awards.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be members of the AHA Council sponsoring the award. If you need to become an AHA Professional Member, you should do so no later than one week prior to the award deadline for your member account to be processed in time for the application submission deadline. Join or Renew
  • Mid-career Achievement Award candidates must be PhDs and or MDs who are still within 5–20 years after their first faculty appointment as of the award application date.
  • Winners are not eligible to reapply or be nominated for the same award in subsequent years.
  • Each recipient of AHA council-sponsored awards, regardless of category, is eligible to receive only one council-sponsored award each year per AHA scientific meeting

How to Apply or Submit a Nomination

Each nomination should contain the following documents in PDF format:

  • Nominee's curriculum vitae or NIH bio sketch that includes awards, publications and grant funding
  • A letter of nominationor candidate statement (if self-nominating), drafted on electronic letterhead with a signature. The letter should outline and provide clear examples of how the candidate meets the criteria:
    1. the novelty and innovativeness of the science
    2. the track record of the individual including peer reviewed publications
    3. the potential of the scientific discoveries to transform clinical care
  • A primary letter of recommendation from a colleague who can evaluate the candidate's research contributions. The letter must address each of the major award evaluation criteria and indicate what distinguishes the candidate in each criterion.
  • Up to 2 additional letters of support
