Research Partnership Programs

The American Heart/Stroke Association funds investigator-initiated career development and knowledge discovery projects through its research programs. We're also committed to identifying and supporting specific science areas deemed critical to achieving our mission and strategic objectives. The association has also established partnerships with various organizations to fund focused research programs. The American Heart Association has also provided research administration services to the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, and the Cardiovascular Medical Research & Education Fund (CMREF).

The following foundations will provide funding for programs offered for the next cycle of funding:

AHA/CHF Congenital Heart Defect Research Awards

AHA Logo - June 2019      CHD Logo - June 2019

AHA/CHF Congenital Heart Defects Research Awards

Through the American Heart Association (AHA) and The Children’s Heart Foundation (CHF) AHA/CHF Congenital Heart Defect Research Awards, a total of $22.5 million will be awarded from July 2014 through June 2021. The awards provide support for investigators who are actively conducting basic, clinical, population or translational The AHA and CHF share common priorities and interests in investing in congenital heart defects (CHD) research.

The partnership will fund Predoctoral Fellowships, Postdoctoral Fellowships, Career Development Awards, and Transformational Project Awards directly related to congenital heart defects. Interested parties should submit an application (G@H)  to this program. In addition to the four funding mechanisms offered via this joint AHA-CHF Request for Applications, the AHA's Collaborative Sciences Award might also be of interest to applicants.

For more information, please visit the  CHD Research Awards page.

AHA-VIVA Physicians Research Awards

Special funding is available from VIVA Physicians to support early career scientists interested in embarking on careers in Vascular Science.

The AHA-VIVA Physicians Research Awards will fund meritorious research to advance vascular science and foster the development of early career scientists including Postdoctoral Fellowships and Career Development Awards. These research awards will offer training and mentorship to potential future leaders in the domain of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular investigation, but specifically vascular research.

Interested parties should submit an application for the AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship or Career Development Award. For Questions please email apply@heart.org.

AHA/STS Research Awards

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (and its charitable arm, The Thoracic Surgery Foundation) is collaborating with the American Heart Association to establish the AHA/STS Research Awards. The purpose of the awards is to provide support to investigators conducting research related to cardiothoracic surgery. STS and AHA are jointly funding the program.

Interested parties should submit an application to any AHA investigator-initiated program. Thoracic surgeons are eligible to apply for any post-graduate awards; AHA award deadlines vary. For questions on applications please email apply@heart.org.

AHA Enduring Hearts Foundation Research Award

The Enduring Hearts Foundation is working together with the American Heart Association (AHA) to establish a research award for investigators conducting research specific to solid organ transplantation longevity.

Interested parties should submit an application to any AHA investigator-initiated program.

AHA/ASA/ABF Lawrence M. Brass, MD Stroke Research Award

Special funding is available from the American Brain Foundation to support a training award for an individual interested in embarking on a career in cerebrovascular research related to vascular neurology, stroke and neurocritical care.

The Lawrence M. Brass Stroke Research Award encourages early career investigators with supportive mentoring relationships to conduct introductory pilot studies that will guide future strategies for reducing cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease. The science focus includes all population research broadly related to cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease.

Interested parties should submit an application for an AHA Postdoctoral Fellowship. For Questions please email apply@heart.org.

AHA/Myocarditis Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship Award

Special funding is available from the Myocarditis Foundation to support a postdoctoral fellowship for an investigator proposing innovative basic, clinical or translational research projects relevant to the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment epidemiology and/or prevention of myocarditis

Interested parties should submit a Postdoctoral Fellowship application.

AHA/CCF Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Research Award

The Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation (CCF) and the American Heart Association (AHA) have established a joint research award to support investigators conducting basic science, clinical, and epidemiologic research on pediatric cardiomyopathy with a strong translational component.

CCF is committed to advancing medical knowledge, standardizing diagnostic and treatment guidelines, and developing targeted therapies for all forms of cardiomyopathies affecting children.

Interested parties should submit an application for an AHA Career Development Award, Innovative Project Award, or Transformational Project Award and state their interest in the AHA/CCF joint research award. For questions please email apply@heart.org.

The following list of foundations have partnered with the American Heart Association in the past:

Friedreich's Ataxia Research Alliance AHA/FARA Ataxia Cardiology Research Award

Award for research related to Friedreich's Ataxia and cardiology; supports basic, clinical, population or translational research relevant to the causes or treatment of cardiology diseases in Friedreich's Ataxia patients.

AHA/DuPont Nutrition & Health Grant-in-Aid Award

AHA/DuPont Nutrition & Health Grant-in-Aid Award

Special funding from DuPont Nutrition & Health to support an investigator interested in innovative basic, clinical or translational research projects directly related to isolated soy protein research.

ASP/AHA Career Development Award

The Association of Specialty Professors partnered with the American Heart Association to designate a Scientist Development Grant to support physician investigators interested in embarking on academic careers in cardiovascular aging research and/or cardiovascular disease in older adults.

AHA/ASA/EMF/SAEM Emergency Medicine Research Fellow-to-Faculty Transition Award

To support a career development award for an individual interested in embarking on an academic career into emergency medicine research.

AHA/PHA Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
