PhD
San Diego State University, University California San Diego

Eduardo Hernandez Mozo earned his BA in Microbiology and Psychology from San Diego State University in 2023. Since then, he has been pursuing a PhD in the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology with a focus on behavioral medicine.

Originally from San Diego, he identifies as a first-generation, low-income Latino scholar raised by Mexican immigrant parents who worked in low-wage domestic labor jobs. Eduardo and his family faced several social barriers, such as language barriers, lack of health insurance, and discrimination, which made it hard to access healthcare. Motivated partly by his personal experience, Eduardo began a journey to pursue higher education with the goal of serving his community through health disparity research.

Since starting his PhD, Eduardo has received several prestigious and competitive fellowships, such as the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship and the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Research Scholars Program. His research focuses on understanding how adverse social determinants of health affect cardiometabolic, cardiovascular disease, and mental health outcomes in low-income, Latino, and LGBTQ+ populations.

He is also interested in creating technology-enabled social care and behavioral interventions to enhance cardiovascular health in these populations. His long-term aim is to implement these in various settings, such as healthcare and workplaces, and translate findings into practical health policies to address social needs.

As a future bilingual, bicultural clinical scientist, Eduardo aims to become an independent researcher focused on developing systems that support families like his, prevent cardiometabolic diseases, and help people live long, healthy lives through culturally tailored community-based interventions.
