Acute Coronary Syndromes in Premenopausal Women
Published: February 03, 2026
- Premenopausal women presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are a unique and often under-recognized patient population. These women have traditionally been considered at lower cardiovascular risk than other groups. There is a growing appreciation of the potential risk for ACS in this younger subset of women.
- Atherosclerotic disease (obstructive or non-obstructive) accounts for most presentations, but a substantial number are attributable to non-atherosclerotic etiologies including spontaneous coronary artery dissection, epicardial coronary artery spasm and coronary embolism.
- This American Heart Association scientific statement addresses this major clinical practice gap, with a view to providing a holistic management framework for ACS in premenopausal women including specific diagnostic and management algorithms.
