Eric Belin de Chantemèle, DSc, is the Leon Henri Charbonnier Endowed Chair, Regents’ Professor and associate director of the Vascular Biology Center at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

He is a recognized expert in the study of the mechanisms underlying hypertension and cardiometabolic diseases. His laboratory was the first to identify the adipokine leptin as a direct stimulator of aldosterone secretion and to propose the novel concept that obesity-associated hypertension involves sex-specific mechanisms: leptin-mediated aldosterone production in females and leptin-mediated sympathoactivation in males. His group was also the first to propose mechanistic explanations for the increased prevalence of hypertension in people living with HIV.

Belin de Chantemèle earned a Doctor of Science in cardiovascular physiology from Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 in France before joining the Medical College of Georgia, initially as a postdoctoral researcher and later as a faculty member. He currently holds tenure in the Department of Medicine. A prolific researcher, Belin de Chantemèle has published over 82 articles in journals including Hypertension and Circulation. He is also a well-funded investigator, serving as a project leader on a Program Project Grant and managing four R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health. In addition to his research achievements, Belin de Chantemèle is a dedicated mentor who has guided numerous students and trainees, many of whom have transitioned to faculty positions.
