First Conference on the Scientific Basis of Heart Failure in Children

R. Mark Payne, M.D.A Message from R. Mark Payne, M.D., Conference Chair: A conference on the scientific basis of heart failure in children and young adults was held May 14–16, 2008, in Estes Park Colorado. Approximately 80 clinical and basic scientists and trainees were present for this focused and highly interactive conference. The Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young sponsored the conference, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, Children's Cardiomyopathy Foundation and the Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences provided grants as co-sponsors.

This translational research conference progressed from basic research to clinical science of heart failure in children. This format was integral to the key goals of increasing interdisciplinary collaborations between investigators, and focusing attention on the need for greater clinical and basic research on heart failure in the young. The conference provided many opportunities to meet with clinical and basic colleagues from around the nation with wide-ranging research interests and expertise within the community of heart failure research. Another goal of this conference was to provide a forum for the exchange of current information about new and emerging scientific research in pediatric heart failure, and to translate new ideas and research from other areas into pediatric heart failure. Thus, an important function of this conference was to point out those questions and problems in pediatric heart failure that are not being well addressed by current research programs. An important area of emphasis for the conference was to provide ample opportunities for young scientists and clinicians to interact with more senior scientists in their research area to facilitate the exchange of ideas. Approximately 40 abstracts were presented during the conference. The informal format of the conference, with many invited presentations as well as poster presentations, encouraged a thoughtful and exciting exchange of information among scientists and clinicians.
