Jianyi “Jay” Zhang, M.D., Ph.D.

Jianyi Jay Zhang, M.D., Ph.D.Welcome to the Basic Cardiovascular Council of the American Heart Association. I am truly privileged to serve as the Chair of the Council to promote the mission of AHA. In 1999, the Circulation Council merged with the Council on Basic Science to form BCVS. Since then, it has become one of the largest councils at AHA and one of the largest organizations in cardiovascular sciences globally. We aim to advance the mechanistic understanding of cardiovascular physiology under normal and diseased conditions from genetic, cellular, and molecular perspectives, developmental and aging, and deliver innovative treatment options to improve public health. We sincerely encourage you to participate in the vast array of activities and volunteer opportunities offered.

It is no secret that we have faced immeasurable challenges in research and medicine throughout the global pandemic. Yet we step into the second half of 2022, hoping that global health conditions continue to improve. The pandemic has shown the world that cardiovascular health must be prioritized. I am confident that this community of outstanding scientists and leaders will pave the way for new therapies and breakthroughs.

I would be remiss not to acknowledge the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the BCVS. We stand firm in our belief that diverse perspectives and experiences enrich our community and allow us to more effectively examine healthcare inequities and improve the quality of our research and training.

I must recognize the incredible work of our past chair, doctor Elizabeth McNally, without whom we would not have navigated the tumultuous waters of COVID-19 as gracefully as we did. We welcome our new members around the world and encourage your avid participation as we look forward to the future.

With thanks,

Jianyi Jay Zhang MD PhD Signature
