The Foundation of Our Work

The American Heart Association is the largest non-profit, non-governmental funder of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular research in the U.S. Many research programs are offered annually, while others are one-time grants. The Heart Association funds basic, clinical, population and data science research. Some programs require pre-proposals, with full proposals by invitation only. Career Development Award
Proposal deadline: Tuesday, December 1, 2026

Supports highly promising healthcare and academic professionals in the early years of first professional appointment to assure the applicant’s future success as a research scientist in the field of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular disease research.

Within this award, additional collaboration money has been designated through the California Walnut Commission and the VIVA Physician Research Award.

Using Get With the Guidelines® Clinical Registry Data to Address Gaps in Care of Patients with Cardiovascular Disease or Stroke
Proposal Deadline: Friday, December 4, 2026

For early career researchers to learn to use the Association's GWTG clinical registry data. To apply for the grant, individuals must attend the two virtual training sessions on Sept. 30 and Oct. 13.

Innovative Project Award
Required Pre-proposal deadline: Wednesday, December 9, 2026

Funds highly innovative, high-impact research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the field of cardiovascular and/or cerebrovascular research. The award promotes unexplored ideas; preliminary data is not required and not accepted as part of the proposal. The principal investigator must hold a post-baccalaureate PhD degree or equivalent, or doctoral-level clinical degree, such as MD, DO, DVM, PharmD, or PhD in nursing, public health, or other clinical sciences.

Heart Transplantation Research Network Planning Grant
Deadline: Tuesday, December 15, 2026

Provides support for the development of a detailed trial protocol and grant to be submitted to a federal agency or other major funder focused on developing and testing diagnostic or therapeutic interventions to improve health outcomes.
