Sofia Ahmed, MD, is a professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, where she holds the University of Alberta Chair in Sex and Gender and serves as Academic Lead – Women’s Health at the Women & Children’s Health Research Institute. She is an internationally recognized nephrologist and clinician-scientist, and her research has advanced understanding of how sex, gender, reproductive factors, menopause and hormone use influence kidney, cardiovascular and blood pressure health.

Ahmed completed her MD and internal medicine residency at the University of Toronto, followed by a nephrology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital and a master’s degree in medical sciences at Harvard University. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, led chapters in major nephrology textbooks and contributed to national and international guidelines and scientific statements in kidney, hypertension and cardiovascular health, including work with Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes, the Canadian Cardiovascular Society and the American Heart Association.

Ahmed has delivered plenary and keynote presentations at major national and international scientific meetings, including the World Congress of Nephrology. She is chair of the Canadian Medical Association Journal Governing Council and past-president of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences.

Her contributions have been recognized with the Hypertension Canada Senior Investigator Award, Canadian Medical Association May Cohen Award for Women Mentors and American Society of Nephrology Distinguished Mentor Award. A strong proponent of mentorship, she is committed to fostering excellence in the next generation of researchers.
