Timothy J. Kamp, MD, PhD, FAHA, FACC, FISHR, received his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Chicago and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiovascular medicine fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He subsequently joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he practices clinical cardiology, directs an active cardiovascular research program, is the Craig T. January Professor of Medicine, Cell and Regenerative Biology, and is director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Center.
Kamp’s research focuses on understanding the fundamental mechanisms underlying arrhythmias and heart failure, as well as developing strategies for cardiac regeneration. His laboratory has advanced understanding of the subcellular regulation of cardiac L-type Ca2+ channels by auxiliary proteins and of channel remodeling in heart failure. Kamp’s group was among the first to demonstrate that human pluripotent stem cells can generate distinct types of functional cardiomyocytes. Subsequent work led to robust methods for differentiating human pluripotent stem cells into specific cardiac lineages, technologies that are now widely used throughout the field. Research using patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cells has also provided important insights into inherited heart diseases. In addition, Kamp and his colleagues are developing strategies for safe myocardial repair following myocardial infarction using human iPSC-derived cardiac progenitor cells.
Kamp is a member of the American Heart Association Council on Basic Cardiovascular Sciences and has served as both a peer reviewer and volunteer for the American Heart Association. He has served on numerous editorial boards and NIH review committees. He currently serves as president of the North American Section of the International Society for Heart Research.
