E. Dean McKenzie, MD, is a native Texan and graduated from the University of Texas in Austin prior to attending medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. After completing residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery, he went on to specialize in congenital heart surgery. Practicing for 27 years at three different institutions, including Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and currently Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin, Dr. McKenzie has performed thousands of cardiac operations on children and adults born with congenital heart disease.
Dr. McKenzie was instrumental in the development of the heart center at Texas Children’s Hospital, which was ranked No. 1 in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. His practice also involves pediatric thoracic organ transplantation. He founded the first pediatric lung transplant program in the southwestern United States and performed the first combined pediatric lung/liver transplant in Texas.
