Jia Long Zhuo, MD, PhD, is a well-recognized scientist and leader in hypertension and renal physiology research. He currently serves as the Director of Tulane Hypertension and Renal Center of Excellence and an AAU-endowed Professor at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Zhuo earned his medical degree from Guangxi Medical University in China and PhD degree in renal physiology at the University of Melbourne in Australia.

Over the past three decades, his groundbreaking work on localization, roles and mechanisms of circulating, tissue, and intracellular angiotensin II in the kidney has significantly advanced the understanding of the mechanisms of intratubular angiotensin II on proximal tubular sodium reabsorption, blood pressure homeostasis, and angiotensin II-induced hypertension.

More recently, Zhuo’s group successfully developed novel proximal tubule-selective, genetically modified mouse models which provide new insights into the important roles of proximal tubule NHE3, AT1a receptors, and mitochondrial angiotensin II in angiotensin II-induced hypertension.

Dr. Zhuo’s research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and has yielded numerous high impact publications in leading scientific journals, such as Circulation, Hypertension and Kidney International.

As a leading expert in the renin-angiotensin system, Dr. Zhuo is a prolific national and international speaker and has received numerous honors, including prestigious fellowships of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, American Heart Association and American Society of Nephrology.

As a dedicated volunteer, Dr. Zhuo has served on multiple NIH study sections and editorial boards and played a leadership role in the American Physiological Society Physiological Genomics Group.
