Stephen Chan, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist and cardiologist. He serves as the Vitalant Chair in Vascular Medicine, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Vascular Medicine Institute at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) School of Medicine. Dr. Chan graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before entering the MD/PhD program at the University of California, San Francisco. He completed residency training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) and fellowship training at the Massachusetts General Hospital. Steve joined the BWH faculty in 2009, before arriving at Pitt in 2015.

At Pitt, Dr. Chan established a thriving clinical and research enterprise. He published seminal basic and translational discoveries in pulmonary vascular biology and mechanisms of heart-lung-brain communication, across journals such as Science, Cell, Cell Metab, J Clin Invest, Sci Transl Med, Circulation and Circ Res). Dr. Chan has served as primary mentor for more than 35 trainees with success across career development and independent research funding. Dr. Chan directs a clinical program of excellence in pulmonary hypertension. He founded a humanitarian telemedicine organization, the Addis Clinic, serving east Africa, and a biotech company, Synhale Therapeutics, developing heart and lung disease therapies.

Dr. Chan leads an AHA SFRN program, program grants from the WoodNext Foundation, and NIH R- and U-level awards. Dr. Chan was elected to the Association of University Cardiologists, Association of American Physicians and American Society of Clinical Investigation (ASCI), for which he serves as JCI Insight Deputy Editor. Recently, Dr. Chan was elected as ASCI Vice President and will assume the role of President in 2027.
