2025 HTN Mid Career Award for Research Excellence Lecturer – Gaetano Santulli, MD, PhD, FAHA

Gaetano Santulli, MD, PhD, FAHA
Albert Einstein College of Medicine
New York, New York
Dr. Gaetano Santulli, MD, PhD, FAHA, is a physician-scientist and cardiologist currently working in the Department of Medicine (Cardiology) and the Department of Molecular Pharmacology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He earned his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Naples Federico II and completed postdoctoral training at Columbia with support from the American Heart Association and NIH K99/R00 funding.
Dr. Santulli’s research focuses on the molecular pathophysiology of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders, with an emphasis on intracellular calcium signaling and non-coding RNAs. His laboratory has elucidated mechanisms linking calcium release channels to the development of heart failure and diabetes, in both preclinical and clinical studies. Supported by multiple NIH grants from NHLBI and NIDDK, the Hirschl/Weill Trust, the American Heart Association and other foundations, his group investigates the interplay between calcium dysregulation, metabolic stress and vascular dysfunction.
A prolific author and editor, Dr. Santulli has contributed to more than 300 peer-reviewed publications and served as editor of several influential volumes, including Translational Aspects of Cardiovascular Biology: From Bench to Bedside; Mitochondrial Dynamics in Cardiovascular Medicine; and microRNA: From Molecular Biology to Clinical Practice. Dr. Santulli's broad expertise spans hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, angiogenesis and endothelial dysfunction. He applies interdisciplinary approaches — from calcium imaging to RNA biology — to uncover therapeutic targets and advance translational science.
