Jane Freedman, MD, is the Gladys Parkinson Stahlman professor of cardiovascular research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the past director of the division of cardiovascular medicine and physician-in-chief of the Vanderbilt Heart and Vascular Institute. She is the interim chair of the department of medicine at Vanderbilt and physician-in-chief for Vanderbilt University Hospital. She completed residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a cardiology fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Freedman has served as chair of the national American Heart Association Peer Review Committee and is the current editor-in-chief for the leading basic cardiovascular journal, Circulation Research. She is co-director of the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular T32 training grant and is PI on several NIH awards. She oversees two research programs. The first is a basic science laboratory that examines the role of immunity, infection and inflammation on atherothrombotic disease; the lab made the initial discoveries demonstrating the role of platelets in mediating human immunity. The second facility uses high-throughput technologies to study gene expression and proteomic data for a wide range of clinical and translational projects.
