Robert Neumar, MD, PhD, FAHA, is professor of emergency medicine and molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Michigan, where he is also a member of the Max Harry Weil Institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation and the Extracorporeal Life Support Research Laboratory.

He has over 35 years’ research experience in the field of cardiac arrest resuscitation. His basic science investigations have focused on molecular mechanisms of post-cardiac arrest brain injury and therapeutic strategies to improve neurologic outcomes after cardiac arrest. His research also includes large animal and clinical studies of extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation for refractory cardiac arrest.

Neumar previously chaired the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee, and he currently co-chairs the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). Neumar co-chaired the international writing group that published the first consensus statement defining post-cardiac arrest syndrome in 2008. Since then, the field has seen tremendous international growth in laboratory and clinical research focused on improving care and outcomes of patients resuscitated from cardiac arrest and the development of international guidelines for post-cardiac arrest care.
