Alan T Hirsch MD Mid Career Award in Vascular Medicine

To qualify for this Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine award you must meet the following deadlines:

  • January 3, 2024 – Deadline to have an active AHA membership with this Council.
  • January 17, 2024, 6 p.m. Central US Time – Deadline to submit your science to Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine and to apply for this award.
  • The work covered by the abstract must not have been published at the time of abstract submission or presented at a national meeting or world congress before May 15, 2024.

The Alan T. Hirsch, MD Mid-Career Award in Vascular Medicine encourages and supports the efforts of peripheral vascular disease investigators who are at mid-career level. The purpose of this award is to encourage participation in the Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and AHA activities by providing travel funds to attend the Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine Scientific Sessions, present research in oral or poster format, and engage in discussion with senior investigators.

Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be a member of the Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease (member number required to complete award application).
  • Be an associate professor.
  • Must be actively involved in research related to peripheral vascular disease (artery or venous).
  • Be accepted for oral or poster presentation at Vascular Discovery Scientific Sessions.
  • Applicants may apply for the award multiple times with different abstracts, as long as the applicant is the presenting author on each abstract. However, an applicant is eligible to receive only one award, even if multiple abstracts are accepted.
  • Winners are not eligible to reenter the competition in subsequent years.
  • An individual may not compete for similar young investigator awards from other American Heart Association scientific councils during the same year for the same meeting.
  • The work covered by the abstract must not have been published at the time of abstract submission or presented at a national meeting or world congress before the conference. The abstract must comply with the AHA Abstract Submission Guidelines as outlined by the Vascular Discovery Program Committee.
  • Be present at the Vascular Discovery Scientific Sessions, to qualify for this award.
  • There are no citizenship requirements.

Application Requirements

  • Abstract must be submitted to one of the following categories for presentation at the Vascular Discovery Scientific Sessions:
    • Aortic Aneurysm Disease
    • Peripheral Artery Disease, Carotid Artery Disease and Stroke
    • Venous Thromboembolism and Lymphatic Diseases
  • The applicant must be the presenting author, although the abstract may have co-authors.
  • Only 1 application per candidate will be considered.

Judging Criteria

The applicant will be assessed on:

  • The quality and originality of the submitted abstract.
  • Letter from the candidate’s sponsor and any other reference letters, plus the candidate’s CV.

Prize

The winner will receive a plaque and $1,000 award for conference travel. The award will be presented at the Vascular Discovery 2024 Council dinner in Chicago, Illinois.

How to Apply

The applicant must:

  • Submit an original abstract to the Vascular Discovery: From Genes to Medicine Scientific Sessions. The abstract must be in accordance with the rules and regulations for submitting abstracts and must have been submitted by the abstract submission deadline.
  • Select the Alan T. Hirsch, MD Mid-Career Award in Vascular Medicine during the abstract submission process.
  • The following must be submitted by uploading into the abstract submission system (at the "Awards Application Materials Upload" step):
    • A complete curriculum vitae, including bibliography, and clear documentation demonstrating that the applicant is an associate professor.
      Though not required, additional letters of support or reference from individuals familiar with the applicant, his or her background, or his or her research may be submitted.
