Cardiovascular Surgery Scholarship

Council on Cardiovascular Surgery and Anesthesia

Selection of Institution/Students

Selection of the candidates will be based on the quality of a proposal and will be determined by a three member subcommittee of the CVSA Leadership Committee.

As many as five students may be considered for the award from a single institution; however, only one award will be made to a given institution each year. No student may receive an award more than once. Applications should be made on behalf of specific student(s) by name; terms such as “to be selected”, “to be named later” are not acceptable.

The candidate must provide a written statement from their preceptor who will be responsible for guiding the student during the scholarship period. All scholarships are awarded with the understanding that the preceptor will accept full responsibility for the program, its supervision, and the completion of formal reports. The preceptor must be a full time faculty member in the specialties of cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, or cardiovascular anesthesia.

Electronic submission through the council awards application system is required. Hard copies of any part of the application cannot be accepted. Information each applying candidate must submit with the application form includes:

  • A brief description of the proposed program including the facilities and personnel to be involved
  • Preceptor’s statement describing the duties and responsibilities of the student, the dates of the training period and the specific education and training that will be provided
  • A statement of the anticipated gains in knowledge and experience for the student upon completion of the program
  • Curriculum vitae of the student and of preceptor
  • W-9 form from institution

The scholarships are awarded through the student’s institution. The entire amount must be allocated to the student as soon as possible and a basic report detailing the disbursement should be submitted to the Council Awards Manager. The entire amount must be used by the institution for student stipends, and as a scholarship, should not be taxed. The institution will submit an expenditure report to the American Heart Association when the project is completed that summarizes how the student used the funds.

  • $2,000 Stipend
  • 1 year AHA membership
  • A $750 travel stipend will also be awarded to the student to help offset the costs of attending Scientific Sessions. Awardees are expected to attend the annual leadership meeting and report their experience to the CVSA Leadership Committee.
  • Complimentary ticket to Annual Business Meeting (Council Dinner)

Upon completion of the program, a report by the student describing the goals and accomplishments and a summary by the preceptor must be submitted to the Council Awards Manager at

Visit the Council Awards web site for full award details and to obtain the application form. AHA Membership is required of all applicants for this award. If you are joining the AHA to apply, please wait on your AHA membership number to arrive from AHA Member Services via e-mail before creating an online profile and starting your application file. We suggest that new members join the AHA as soon as possible for the membership number to be processed and delivered in time for the application deadline.
