Council on Cardiovascular Surgery & Anesthesia (CVSA) Minority Travel Grant

Award Application Window: April 19–Aug. 20, 2017 at 5 p.m. (Central time)

The American Heart Association’s Council on Cardiovascular Surgery & Anesthesia is offering a travel grant to minority early career investigators and students to attend AHA Scientific Sessions. The award will serve to honor accomplished minority students and investigators while enabling them to get more involved in the AHA and in Scientific Sessions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate must be a minority by the standard NIH definition: He or she belongs to a minority group underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral science careers, based on their minority group's representation in the total population. This includes American Indians (including Alaskan Natives, Eskimos and Aleutians), Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders, African Americans and Hispanics.  Other candidates considered a minority are those from medically underserved populations with low socio-economic status and those living in rural areas to include whites.
  • Hispanic countries include the following: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and Venezuela
  • The candidate must be a U.S. citizen, a noncitizen national (born in American Samoa or Swains Island), or a U.S. permanent resident.
  • The candidate must hold an academic (or equivalent) rank below associate professor (e.g., assistant professors, instructors, postdocs, fellows and students). If the candidate is a faculty member, he or she must be within the first four years of the faculty appointment.
  • The applicant must be conducting basic science research in the field of cardiovascular disease.

**Candidates may apply for more than one travel award; however, an applicant is eligible to receive only one travel stipend.

Required Documents

Eligible applicants must submit the following documents through the AHA’s online Council Awards and Fellowship Application System by the application deadline date.

  • A letter of recommendation by a mentor, section chief or department chair, which includes the following:
    • Statement of the candidate's minority status specifically and confirmation that the candidate meets the basic eligibility requirements
    • Candidate’s key accomplishments to date (or other forms of demonstrated excellence and recognition in the case of very junior trainees)
    • Assessment of relevant scientific attributes (intellectual curiosity, drive, critical thinking, problem-solving)
    • Potential for future success as a competitive investigator
  • Curriculum vitae, including bibliography

Prize(s)/Honorarium

A grant will be awarded to two honorees annually. The honorees will each receive up to $1000 to help defray travel expenses to AHA Scientific Sessions to present his or her abstract.

Reimbursement up to $1000 will be made after eligible travel receipts (airfare, hotel, ground transportation) are submitted to the AHA after the meeting. Awardees will be required to pay their own registration costs for the meeting.
