$2000 Scholarship from the American Heart Association – Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health

$2000 Scholarship from the American Heart Association

The scholarship will support course tuition, travel, and lodging expenses. This outstanding course aims to provide a unique training experience in the area of physical activity and exercise research through a series of lectures and workshops held in a beautiful location.

Scholarship applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Be a new investigator (academic rank no higher than assistant professor)
  • Have a demonstrated commitment to research in the area of physical activity
  • Show promise for a future academic career in research
  • Be an active member of the American Heart Association Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health, or submit a letter of support from an active member of the AHA Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health.

How To Apply/Required Documents

Electronic submissions for eligible candidates are to be submitted via email to Dena Thomas at dena.thomas@heart.org. Applications with all 3 required documents must be received by April 15, 2016.
(Please submit one PDF file with the below documents in order)

  • A  cover letter stating interest in the scholarship;
  • A letter of support from the individual's department chief laboratory director or research mentor which outlines the applicant's past achievements, future goals, and potential for future research in the area of physical activity and exercise; and
  • A current curriculum vitae.

Please note: In order to be considered for the scholarship, the PAPH Course application must also be completed online at www.sph.sc.edu/paph.

The 2016 Physical Activity and Public Health (PAPH) Courses will be held September 13-21, 2016 at the Hilton Columbia Center, Columbia, SC.

The Physical Activity and Public Health (PAPH) Courses include an 8-day Postgraduate Course on Research Directions and Strategies and a 6-day Practitioner's Course on Community Interventions. The long-term goal of the courses is to improve the public's health by increasing the number of public health researchers and practitioners who have expertise in the relationship between physical activity and health in populations.

The courses are held in September of each year. Acceptance into the program is on a competitive basis. Approximately 25 fellows are accepted for each course. Criteria for acceptance include professional credentials, experience, and potential to enhance public health research and practice.
