Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing Early Career Travel Grant

One of the main objectives of the CVSN Council is to support trainees and early career investigators. The Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing Early Career Travel Stipend recognizes meritorious work by early career investigators and provides a travel grant to attend the AHA’s Scientific Sessions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All applicants for the Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing Early Career Travel Stipend must be members of the Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing at the time of application. If you need to become an AHA/ASA Professional Member, you should do so no later than August 2 for your membership to be processed in time for the application submission deadline.   • Applicants must be Early Career Investigators or trainees. Trainees are students or postdoctoral fellows. Early Career Investigators are PhDs who have completed training within the last five years or PhDs who are still within in the first five years after their first faculty appointment, as of the award application date.
  • Only one candidate per mentor will be given an award.
  • An accepted abstract is not required for this travel grant; however, an applicant with an accepted abstract cannot apply for both travel grants.
  • Applicants must provide documentation of current status as a student, postdoctoral fellow, or faculty within five years of their appointment (faculty members with more than five years of faculty appointment or non-trainee investigators in industry are ineligible). Such documentation must be an original letter, signed by the candidate’s supervisor or an appropriate institutional officer. The letter must indicate the applicant’s status as a student, postdoctoral fellow, or faculty within five years of their appointment.
  • Applicants are eligible to receive only one travel stipend.
  • There are no citizenship requirements.
  • Martha N. Hill Award finalists will not be eligible to receive a Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing Early Career Travel Grant or Stipend for the same meeting.
  • Applicant must be working in any area of research concerned with aspects of cardiovascular disease prevention or intervention.
  • Applicants must be undergraduate, masters, or doctoral (PhD or equivalent research doctorate) students; post-doctoral fellows; or doctorally degreed early career investigators no more than four years out of training or within four years of their first faculty appointment, as of the award application date.

How to Apply/Required Documents

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required. Hard copies of any part of the application cannot be accepted.

**Candidates may apply for more than one travel award; however, an applicant is eligible to receive only one travel stipend.

Your application file should contain the following documents in PDF format:

  • Original letter on electronic letterhead, signed by the candidate’s supervisor or an appropriate institutional officer simply indicating:
    • The applicant’s status as a student, postdoctoral fellow, or faculty within five years of appointment.
    • The applicant’s key accomplishments to date (or other forms of demonstrated excellence and recognition in the case of very junior trainees)
    • Assessment of relevant scientific attributes (intellectual curiosity, drive, critical thinking, problem-solving)
    • Potential for future success as a competitive investigator
  • Curriculum vitae, including bibliography

AHA Professional Members who are creating an online profile for the first time should make sure to register using their AHA membership identification numbers.

AHA Professional Membership is required of all applicants for this award. If you are joining the AHA to apply, please wait on your AHA membership number to arrive from AHA Member Services via e-mail before creating an online profile and starting your application file. We suggest that new members join the AHA no later than Aug. 2 for the membership number to be processed and delivered in time for the application deadline.

Prizes

Awardees will be notified in September and will receive travel funds up to $660 to use for Scientific Sessions (a reimbursement form will be provided).

Awardees will be required to pay their registration for the meeting and should register no later than Sept. 18th to qualify for the discounted early registration rate.

Winners will each receive a travel stipend up to $660 for use in attending Scientific Sessions to present their research. Winners will provide travel expense receipts to AHA for reimbursement up to $660. Eligible reimbursable expenses include hotel, ground transportation, and airfare to attend Scientific Sessions. Conference registration and meals are not covered.
