Women in Cardiology Trainee Awards for Excellence

Sponsored by the Council on Clinical Cardiology and Merck

Award Application Window: April 19–Aug. 20, 2017 at 5 p.m. (Central time)

Women in Cardiology Trainee Awards

The Women in Cardiology Trainee Awards for Excellence encourage and recognize outstanding academic and clinical performance in women cardiology fellows during cardiovascular-related specialty training. The grant subsidizes travel expenses to the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in November and attendance at the Women in Cardiology professional development program events.

Eligibility Criteria

  • All applicants for travel grants sponsored by a scientific council must be members of the AHA/ASA at any level. If you need to become an AHA/ASA Professional Member, you should do so no later than May 30 for your membership to be processed in time for the application submission deadline. Learn more about AHA membership.
  • All applicants for this award must be members of the AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology (CLCD). Applicants can choose to become a member of this Council by listing CLCD as their council affiliation choice when applying for AHA membership or, if already an AHA member but not a member of CLCD, contact AHA and request that their Council affiliation be changed to CLCD. AHA members may be affiliated with two Councils at any one time without incurring additional fees.
  • Women trainees from ACGME- or AOA-approved cardiology training programs should apply.
  • International fellows are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants must be in a cardiology training program at the time the award is claimed at Scientific Session, i.e., trainees who will be completing their cardiology training program prior to this years’ Scientific Sessions are not eligible for this award.
  • Previous winners of the Women in Cardiology Trainee Award for Excellence are not eligible.
  • Applicants must be able to attend specific Women in Cardiology events at the Scientific Sessions to be able to claim the award.

Evaluation Criteria

This grant acknowledges outstanding trainees who exemplify a balance between clinical expertise and scientific interests. While applicants may be actively engaged in research and have associated publications, this is not a requirement for application and selection. The applicant’s professional development, goals and career achievements will also be considered.

How To Apply/Required Documents

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required. Hard copies of any part of the application cannot be accepted.

The application file should contain the following documents in PDF format:

  • Applicant’s personal statement: Please submit a one-page double- or single-spaced personal statement outlining the following:
    • How receipt of the Women in Cardiology Travel Grant will further your professional development and goals
    • Your research and clinical interests
    • Publications and presentations at meetings
    • Additional information pertaining to your choice of cardiology as a career
  • Letter of reference from applicant’s training program director (ACGME- or AOA- approved program in cardiology) that certifies that the applicant is currently enrolled in the program and provides supportive statements on behalf of the applicant as to why she is worthy of an award.
  • NOTE: Applications including personal statements longer than one-page will not be reviewed.

Visit the Council Awards Application System to complete an application.

A username and password previously set up through online profile registration at Professional Heart Daily will be necessary to access the Application System. If you have not created an online profile yet, please visit Professional Heart Daily to create an online member profile before accessing the Council Awards Application System. AHA Professional Members who are creating an online profile for the first time should make sure to register using their AHA membership identification numbers.

AHA Professional Membership and AHA Council on Clinical Cardiology membership are both required of all applicants for this award. If you are joining the AHA to apply, please wait on your AHA membership number to arrive from AHA Member Services via e-mail before creating an online profile and starting your application file. We suggest that new members join the AHA no later than May 30 for the membership number to be processed and delivered in time for the application deadline.

Prize

  • Up to 10 grant winners will receive $1,000 to be used at their discretion towards expenses associated with attending Scientific Sessions, such as meeting registration, airfare, hotel and meals.
  • Complimentary council dinner ticket, along with recognition and presentation of the certificate at the Clinical Cardiology Council dinner.
