Jeffrey M. Hoeg Award for Basic Science & Clinical Research

The Jeffrey M. Hoeg Arteriosclerosis Award for Basic Science and Clinical Research was established in 1999. The award recognizes an established investigator in the prime of his/her career who has made an outstanding contribution to furthering understanding of the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and/or the development of treatment strategies for its prevention through basic science and clinical research efforts.

This award honors the memory of Jeffrey M. Hoeg, M.D., chief of the Section of Cell Biology within the Molecular Disease Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH. He was an extraordinary research scientist and physician who, in the prime of his career, was working in the field of lipoprotein metabolism and atherosclerosis. Dr. Hoeg died in July 1998 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Candidate must have a doctoral degree.
  • By the date of nomination, the candidate must have held a minimum academic rank of assistant professor for no less than three years up to a maximum academic rank of full professor for no more than five years. The date of appointment to full professor or equivalent should be stated on candidate’s curriculum vitae.
  • Candidate must be working in arteriosclerosis, thrombosis or vascular biology research, which encompasses both basic science and clinical perspectives.
  • Candidate must demonstrate continued productivity in his/her area of research as indicated by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals and receipt of grant awards from public and/or private institutions.
  • Service to the AHA and the ATVB Council will be considered in the evaluation of the criteria.

How to Make a Nomination

Electronic submission through the Council Awards Application System is required. Hard copies of any part of the application cannot be accepted. Individuals may be nominated an unlimited number of times but may receive the award only once.

The nomination file should contain the following documents in PDF format:

  1. A nominating letter thoroughly detailing the candidate’s contributions to the field of arteriosclerosis research. Please submit the letter on letterhead, with signature if possible.
  2. The candidate’s curriculum vitae, including bibliography.

Prize

The winner of the Hoeg Award will present a lecture on a topic of his or her choice in a special plenary session of ATVB|PVD 2017 Scientific Sessions being held May 4-6, 2017, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The honoree will also receive the following:

  • An Engraved plaque
  • $1,500 honorarium
  • Complimentary registration to the ATVB Scientific Sessions
  • Present a seminar on their research in a plenary session during the ATVB|PVD 2017 Scientific Sessions.
  • An invitation to submit a brief review in the ATVB journal that summarizes the seminar.  This will coincide with an announcement of the award in the ATVB journal.
