The Steven N. Blair Award for Excellence in Physical Activity Research

Applicants must submit abstracts to the EPI/Lifestyle 2016 Scientific Sessions, scheduled for March 1 - 4, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona.

General Information

This award is named for Dr. Steven N. Blair in appreciation of his outstanding career as a clinical researcher working in the areas of exercise, physical activity and cardiovascular health. The award recognizes a highly meritorious abstract presentation in this field and stimulates excellence in research by investigators.

The awardee will be selected by the council's Program Committee. Selection will be based on the scientific merit, quality and originality of the abstract. The winning abstract will be the one (among the applicants) achieving the highest average score of all abstracts submitted to the category of physical activity.  The name of the winner will be announced during the conference. The awardee will receive a cash prize of $500 and a plaque.

Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must be members of the AHA.
  • The applicant must be the first and presenting author of the abstract.
  • The work may not have been presented or published in any form.
  • Winners are not eligible to reenter the competition in subsequent years.
  • Applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration for the award.
  • Winners of this award are not eligible to receive cash compensation from another award during the joint EPI/Lifestyle conference.

The Mark Bieber Award

Applicants must submit abstracts to the E PI/Lifestyle 2016 Scientific Sessions, scheduled for March 1- 4, 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona.

General Information

This award honors the memory of Dr. Mark Bieber, one of the founding members of the AHA Industry Nutrition Advisory Panel, for his significant contributions to the field of nutritional science. The award is designed to recognize an early career investigator for outstanding nutrition-related research. The Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health gratefully acknowledges the educational grant provided by the AHA Industry Nutrition Advisory Panel for the support of this award.

The winner of the Mark Bieber Award will be chosen by the Conference Program Committee from applicants who submit abstracts accepted for presentation at the EPI/Lifestyle Scientific Sessions Conference. The decision will be based on 1) the quality of the abstract; 2) prior accomplishments, as highlighted in the CV; and 3) estimated potential, based on letter(s) of recommendation

The winner will be announced during the conference and will receive a cash prize of $1,000, and up to $1,200 in reimbursement for travel expenses.  The winner’s laboratory will be awarded $5,000 for administration by the institution’s Grants and Contracts Department for the winner’s research.

Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must be members of the AHA's Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health Council.
  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree and hold a position at the level of assistant professor or equivalent for not more than 10 years
  • Applicants must submit an abstract to the AHA's Annual Conference sponsored by the Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health.  The abstract must comply with the Conference's abstract submission guidelines. The abstract may be submitted to any category, but the research must be primarily nutrition-related.
  • The abstract must be accepted for presentation (oral or poster) at the Conference and the applicant must be the first author, although the abstract may have co-authors.
  • Winners are not eligible to re-enter the competition in subsequent years.

  • Submit an abstract for the conference by 11:59 PM CDT, Oct. 14, 2015. The abstract may be submitted to any category, but the research must be primarily nutrition-related.
  • Select the award during the abstract submission process.
  • Upload the following documents as instructed during the submission process.
    • Curriculum vitae including bibliography and detail of research funding to date.
    • Letter of recommendation from your immediate supervisor or sponsor (e.g., division head, department chairman or institute director).  The letter should confirm your status as an early career investigator and your primary participation in the design and research of the abstract. The letter should also address any other references to your background and experience that should be considered with regard to this award.
    • One optional additional letter of support or reference from an individual familiar with your background or research may be submitted.

Scott Grundy Fellowship Award for Excellence in Metabolism Research

General Information

Dr. Scott Grundy is a distinguished leader in the metabolic determinants of atherosclerosis. His research interests have included obesity, lipoproteins, genetics, nutrition, lifestyle and pharmacotherapy. He has been active in the development and promulgation of guidelines, consensus statements, expert panel statements and task force summaries, all of which have been instrumental in guiding prevention and treatment efforts for cardiovascular disease.

The Fellowship Award for Excellence in Metabolism Research recognizes three outstanding abstracts submitted by young investigators to the EPI/Lifestyle Scientific Sessions. Up to three awards will be given for the abstracts achieving the highest average scores of all abstracts submitted in the categories of Diabetes/Metabolic Syndrome, Lipids/Lipoproteins, Metabolism, and Obesity. Acceptable entries for consideration include broad categories of study designs, including human or laboratory-based research, small metabolic studies, small clinical trials, and population-based studies.  Each awardee  will receive a cash prize of $500 and a plaque.

Eligibility Requirements

  • All applicants must be members of AHA.
  • The applicant must be in a post-doctoral fellowship, junior faculty position, instructor or assistant professor or equivalent position. (Investigators with more than five full-time years of post-training research faculty experience are not eligible.)
  • Applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration for the award.
  • The applicant must be the first and presenting author of the abstract.
  • The work must not have been previously presented or published in any form.
  • Winners are not eligible to reenter the competition in subsequent years.
  • Winners of this award are not eligible to receive cash compensation from another award during the EPI/Lifestyle conference.

The purpose of the award is to recognize an outstanding abstract submitted by an investigator in the area of “Cardiovascular Health Equity”, including the areas of health behaviors, risk factors, and CVD clinical outcomes. One award will be given for a highly meritorious abstract submitted to the EPI/Lifestyle Scientific Sessions. Acceptable entries for consideration include broad categories of study design involving human subjects, including small metabolic studies, small clinical trials, and population-based studies. At the time of submission individuals will have the option to indicate that their abstract addresses issues related to cardiovascular health equity and would like to have it considered for the award. The awardee will receive a cash prize of $500 and a certificate. The awardee will be formally recognized at the Council dinner during the spring meeting.

  • All applicants must be members of AHA.
  • Applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration for the award.
  • The applicant must be the first and presenting author of the abstract.
  • Abstract must be based on independent research by the applicant
  • The work must not have been previously presented or published in any form.
  • Winners are not eligible to reenter the competition in subsequent years.

General Information

This award encourages Trainees to pursue careers in Cardiovascular Research related to lifestyle and cardiometabolic health. The key topic areas include behavior, diabetes, lipids, nutrition, obesity, and physical activity. The Council is dedicated to honoring early career investigators and exposing them to AHA conferences and learning opportunities. This award will help defray travel costs for up to five trainees (pre-doctoral and post-doctoral) who present abstracts at the EPI/Lifestyle sessions in the spring of 2016. Awardees will receive a cash prize of $1000 and a certificate. Awardees will be formally recognized at the Council dinner during the spring meeting.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The applicant must be the first/primary author of the abstract.
  • The science must be related to the Lifestyle mission: The Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health promotes the expansion and exchange of knowledge with the ultimate goal of improving cardiovascular health across the lifespan. Our council promotes basic, clinical, epidemiological, and translational science related to nutrition, lipids, obesity, diabetes, physical activity, and behavior change.
  • The applicant must be a member of the AHA Lifestyle Council prior to Oct. 14, 2015 to qualify. AHA Professional Membership is required of all applicants for this award. We suggest that new members join the AHA before September 14 so that the membership number can be processed and made available to you in time to complete the award application.
  • Candidates may be graduate students, postdoctoral fellows.
  • The candidate must be the first author of the abstract.
  • The work may not have been presented or published before the conference.
  • Winners of this award will be ineligible for future competition.
  • There are no citizenship restrictions for this award.
  • Applicants may submit only one abstract for consideration for the award.
  • Winners of this award are not eligible to receive cash compensation from another award during the joint EPI/Lifestyle conference.
